Should University Education be More Vocational or Academic?

In this days and ages, there are lots of choices for teenagers to pursue their study in the higher and upper level. It depends on students itself to decide and choose what is the best for them because only themselves know their own specialization either in academic education or vocational education in order to further studies and achieve succeed in their own field. As people can see, many students can achieve the triumph by following on their undertaking and what they are interested in. To be a pioneer, students must follow the flow of the economy and the country’s needs. In consequence, by looking at our nation's main goals of Vision 2020 in order to produce the quality seeds for our own good in the future, based on the sixth challenge which is stated that Malaysia need the establishment of scientific and progressive society, a society that is innovative and forward - looking, one is not only a consumer of technology but also a contributor to the scientific and technological civilization of the future. (Malaysia as a Fully Developed Country-One Definition). It is proved that, Malaysia need dozens of educated students, which can exist the progressive society in order to establish the power of the country itself.

                        Universities are the places which are students choosing to further their studies in the upper level. From the university scope, academic education is purposely to give its scholar's basic knowledge of science and fundamental establish theory to be applied. At the same time, undergraduate will be exposed to the fundamental trade’s process that enable them to appreciate the application of such theory and science in everyday life. While, the vocational education is a learning of the trade process in depth. Trades on vocational is about learning in depth, the detail process in using tools combine it with gifted skills. For instance, of trades is mechanics, welders, charge man and engineer. Students will learn the specific skills for specific machinery in operation in depth. Therefore, university education should be more practicing vocational education because it is an important component of the education system in providing students with many beneficial outcomes that are very useful when they are pursued for their future career. Which vocational education can help the development of the nation and country, graduated students of vocational education will be easy to be in the employment market, also vocational education is long-lasting and useful learning process for students’ life, and it is the experimenting and entertaining education process which practice students become more matured.

                        To begin with, vocational education really helps the development of the nation and the country. In this era, many people are more interested in doing and studies skills because people can gain extra income by doing skills. This is due to our country’s objective that want to increase many skillful workers that can help the development of our nation. People who master in some skills such as underground welder are being highlighted in this country because they can invent something new that can make our nation being well known world widely like others development country that using vocational education and skills as the main method of advancement such as in Japan. As in Malaysia itself, International Technical Education and Vocational Training Programme (INVITE) have been organized by the government, which is aiming to produce graduates with comprehensive skills and knowledge in technical and vocational disciplines to become skilled employees or entrepreneurs. (Skills Training for Employment: Skills Malaysia INVITE programme). INVITE programme is really helping in ensuring the development of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce that really help the advancement of our country. There are Technical Education and Vocational Training (TEVT) that exist in Malaysia really help our country in facing the rapid change in the global economic scenario and help to sustain the economic growth of the country by following the globalization needs. (Skills Training for Employment: Skills Malaysia INVITE programme).  So, it can be concluded that vocational education is a main method for our country in developing the economy in order to be more advance which can compete with other developed country.


                        In addition, “students who have undergone vocational training can find employment in a variety of fields such as call centers, infrastructure sector, office administration, banking, tourism hotel management, retail, agriculture, printing, beauty salons and etc.” (Anusha Balasubramanian). This is proved that students who learn vocational education can be easier being in employment market, which nowadays, many employers need lots of skillful and experienced workers to fill the vacancies of the company. Industry will love a candidate, which equipped with a B.Eng. (Bachelor of Engineering) and a set of SKM (Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia) for its trades also skills and able to present themselves well in doing vocational training since the industry in Malaysia this age requires instant practical training to search the employees. Vocational education is necessary towards students themselves to make them ready physically and mentally to be in the real world challenged in the employment period. This is because, vocational education train students to be fond and master with the specific skills that they learn previously that can be used when facing the employment world. Thus, students who learn vocational are much easier to find the vacancies due to nowadays situations that our nation needs many skillful workers in facing the globalization phase.

                        Another thing is, vocational education is all about experimenting and also entertaining learning process. This is because, generations nowadays are more attracted in learning something that thrilling and can trigger their mind. Students will easily get bored if they learn only theories itself in the class. This can be proved by one of the principles of the learning process which stated that personal experiences can give vibes towards students’ learning process, and also learning that involving feelings, thoughts, memory of past experiences and physical activities are more effective towards students rather than studies which requires students to memorize many factual and theoretical information. (The Learning Process). Thus, students will not easily get bored when facing the learning session and will be more excited when it begin. Otherwise, vocational education can help students to practice themselves to be more matured in handling problems. It trains students to cope with problems that are usually not stated in the books which students need to do the experiments to solve the problems. They need to use both sides of their brain and be creative to solve it. There are lots of famous previous public figures that achieved succeed by trained themselves in vocational skills such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. They conduct the same experiments, many times and never get bored with doing the same things before they succeed in producing their own products and software, which initially they came from person who are not capable in learning academies. But, at the end they are more successful rather than the others and inventing products that very useful to all people. Hence, vocational education is essential in giving students' experiences and make them more interesting when going through the learning session.

                        Last but not least, university education should be more vocational because it is long lasting learning process that can be applied by students continuously in their life. This is because, vocational education is all about useful knowledge. Students need to use both sides of their brain to trigger their mind about specific skills that they learnt. Vocational education can be defined as learning by stages. Students need to learn it step by step, before they can be mastered in the particular skills. Rather than academic education, students can learn the certain subject only for short duration. They will learn deeply about the certain subject only for a while and thus students will learn and do it well only just for the intention to have a good grade for their examinations. Besides, when students learn vocational education, they will learn the skills deeply not broad. For example, in the engineering stream, engineering based courses is 3 years courses. Year 1 students will learn 100% theory and sciences and also soft skills. For the year 2, students will learn 50% academic theory plus 50% of trade theory and lab practical entry level, thus, at the end of year 2 students will already awarded SKM (Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia). And for the year 3, students will learn 20% of academic and another 80% for industry exposure and also thesis. (Sariani, A. R., personal communication, October 18, 2014). They will learn the stages by stages from time to time. So, it can be concluded that, the deeper the skills, the more specialize students will become.


                        To conclude, vocational education is very essential in this year’s generation because it is the important components of the education system which can really provide students with many beneficial consequences that are very useful when they are facing their future career. Besides, universities also should advertise and promote students towards the vocational education courses to make them briefly understand about the courses and the career that related with via using mass media mostly which is the close interaction for students to gain information. Hence, students who really skillful and capable in vocational can develop their talent and being more succeeded in the vocational area which is really beneficial in today’s ages.
